I am a doctoral student at the University of Illinois in the history department, interested in nineteenth-century Russian cultural and intellectual history. At present I am focusing on the interactions among different language communities in the Russian Empire.

For an explanation of the title, see my first blog post. The header image is a crop of a photograph of the St. Nilus Monastery on Stolobny island in Lake Seliger. It was taken in 1910 by the Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, a pioneer of early color photography.
